Wellness Is Not What You Think

My health journey began in 2012. In 2011, I had a total thyroidectomy as a result of thyroid cancer and I was told that I’d simply take one pill for the rest of my life and feel completely normal. I was far from feeling normal. I was far from feeling normal even well before that after the birth of my second child in 2005, but no one recognized this, and all care went toward the baby.

Today, I am 54 years old 🥳. I feel better now than I ever did a decade ago. And I think I look better, healthier and more vibrant too.

Western medicine took me as far as I could go on my quest to feel normal and healthy after the removal of my thyroid and a couple of lymph nodes.

It was in my own hands to get to a point of feeling vibrant and alive once again.

After seeing alternative health practitioners to help me build my health back up, this is what drove me to go back to college in 2016. Don’t get me wrong, this was only a stepping stone to more certifications and learnings all along that I’ve achieved.

Everyone in this space of wellness has a story that fuels their passion. Since 2012, my passion has not wavered. It is my life goal to share with as many people as I can that we need many options to support our wellness and ideally, be proactive with our health. We are humans. We are not robots. Which is why we must all be treated as bioindividuals.

My podcast, Sandy K Nutrition Health & Lifestyle Queen, was created in February 2020 (now over 1.2 million downloads). This IS my megaphone. This is why in 2023 I made a conscious decision to see fewer clients and focus on my megaphone to reach more people to show that options are necessary and that our bioindividuality in our wellness is crucial to aging better.

I go into a lot more in my book about this. 2024. This is the year I am going to finish writing my book, unlike anything I’ve been able to find out there. Most of you know that I am an English Literature graduate and I love writing. My book will align with the topics I love to cover in my podcast which is a little bit of science, absolutely, but also includes the esoteric. Bridging the Gap Between Science and Soul is my working title.

I’ve seen that many may be mistaken on this quest to wellness. Science alone cannot be the only foundation for our wellness. I want every one of you to watch the film, Inner Worlds Outer Worlds. This might help open up your minds to the fact that perhaps everything Huberman, Attia or Sinclair put out there is not a fact to support your bio-individual health. Smart leaders in the wellness space, absolutely, but something is missing here.

The biggest miss in this entire world is that unless an MD or a reputable scientist says so, many feel it is useless to support your quest to age better, and healthier. And there are no studies to show it helps. Yet so much of what I write about are do-no-harm options that might support your health. And I must note that I have personally been harmed by scientifically proven treatments. More on this in my book.

Let me give you an important example of how taking a science-only approach may be misleading. I might add that I was recently shamed for my choice here because of what the science says now by a pretty prolific figure in the sleep science space during a podcast recording. I chose not to release this recording.

When my son was around 10 years old, he would pace at night past midnight unable to fall asleep, then have to get up in the morning to go to school and he played competitive sports. This was during the time that not only was my daughter diagnosed with a malignant tumor, but I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Connection? Maybe. Maybe his young body felt the stress within our family. During this time he also stopped growing. I can surmise that this was because his body was simply not getting the sleep he needed. I can recall my discussion with our family doctor, concerned, that in a year he hadn’t grown. We discussed melatonin and microdosing as even back then before I became a practitioner and podcaster, I was a researcher in my health and my family’s health. Our doctor supported my suggestion for a tiny amount of melatonin (0.25 mg), despite that now, studies have shown that melatonin is normally already high at that age, and now we have many notable health figures strongly warning against giving melatonin to children, indicating this may delay puberty as the biggest risk.

Guess what? He started to grow soon after he began going to sleep at a regular time. His issue wasn’t staying asleep. It was the rumination that kept him from falling asleep. And guess what else? He reached puberty at a normal age and is now 6’1″.

Had I not helped him with that rumination, would he have started to grow? Maybe. Would he have reached 6’1″? Maybe. But soon after I helped him with this small dose of melatonin, he began to grow and didn’t encounter any adverse side effects. This is what we know now.

You see, a science-only approach to our wellness can be a big miss. Of course, I still always believe in a do-no-harm approach. But scientifically-proven options can also harm. As can natural approaches. As can esoteric approaches. What’s missing? Resonance. How do we check if something resonates with our bio-individuality?

I look to two methods here. Know your genetics and know how to muscle test. I’ve been muscle testing my kids since they were young, before I became a practitioner, even for things such as probiotics. I’ve analyzed our genetics.

Is muscle testing scientifically proven to be accurate? No, it isn’t. But when we can tap into our energetic centres, we can use this as a tool to help us with many aspects of our wellness and piece this together with our genetics and other modalities to support our wellness.

This is where science meets the esoteric.

Why wouldn’t you open yourself up to practices that you may resonate with that won’t hurt you, and can support you?

So, my friends, I am wishing you an incredible 2024. May this year be the year we all succeed. Look out for my book. Listen to my podcast. I appreciate all your support. And always remember this one thing – we in this world of wellness like to control, but there is only so much we can control in this life here on earth🙏🏻.
